Windows 8's stock apps get pictured, tease its final build

Microsoft might be wavering on the well established Metro moniker that it ascribes to its flat, live tile design aesthetic, but that doesn't make it any less pervasive in Windows 8's final build. Care to see? Impatient Windows fans have pilfered a handful of screenshots from Google and Windows Store previews, revealing what appears to be the final look for several of Windows 8's apps. Gumshoes at the Neowin forums uncovered fresh previews of the Photos, Mail, Messaging, People, Calendar Xbox music, Xbox video and Xbox SmartGlass applications. Liveside followed up on the forum's findings with a peek at the OS' baked in Bing integration. The camera interface's crop and video playback features make an appearance too, as do the operating system's legacy time wasters: Solitaire, Minesweeper and Mahjong -- slacking off never looked so good. Check them out for yourself in the gallery below, and agonize over how far away October 26th suddenly seems.

Final Fantasy VII PC Revamp Confirmed

leak that the JRPG's been revamped for a PC re-release. Final Fantasy VII was released for PC back in 1998, but is a bit tricky to get ahold nowadays and disagrees somewhat with modern hardware and operating systems. As well as, presumably, not requiring fiddling and fussing to run on your shiny modern PC, the revamp boasts new features. It'll pack 36 achievements for you to collect, cloud saves so you can keep your progress across multiple computers, and a new 'Character Booster' which lets you boost your HP, MP and Gil levels to the max and get on with the game. Plus, of course, it doesn't require a ton of fiddling to get working. When will you get to play it? "Soon" is all Square Enix has to offer. Curiously, the publisher says it'll be available "exclusively" on its own store, but surely it wouldn't be that daft in this modern wonderful of digital distribution? FlyNano proto takes to the air, final model will soar mainly with electrons (video)

Last time we saw the FlyNano amphibious ultralight plane, we weren't sure if it would be gas or electric, and we wondered who'd be brave enough to fly the tiny thing -- if it flew at all. That's all been answered, because the sub-154 pound carbon fibre vehicle completed its first flight, taking a brief skip above a Finnish lake with pilot Pekka Kauppinen at the helm. The short trip showed promise, and the company affirmed it would continue development and airborne tests with the aim of delivering to customers in late 2013. According to the maker, recent technology gains mean that electric motors will now be the main power option.
